A Safe, Modern and Future-Ready Home
We recently completed a full house rewire in Sheffield’s S11 area, upgrading a large six-bedroom property before the new owners moved in.
The project involved replacing and improving the electrical installation throughout the home, adding more socket outlets, installing hardwired internet connections and preparing dedicated circuits for future kitchen renovations.
With the family working towards a firm moving date, careful planning and clear communication were essential from the start.
The Client
Our clients, James and Becky, were relocating from Liverpool to Sheffield with their toddler and another baby on the way.
They needed a reliable domestic electrician in Sheffield who could complete the work before they moved in and make sure the property was safe, practical and ready for modern family life.
Their main priorities were:
- Completing the full rewire before moving day
- Bringing the electrical installation up to modern UK standards
- Adding enough sockets for a large family home
- Improving internet connectivity in the attic rooms
- Preparing the kitchen electrics for future renovation work
The Challenge
The property purchase and moving schedule meant the project had a clear deadline.
Alongside replacing the older wiring, we needed to think carefully about how the home would be used in the future. The family already had plans to renovate and potentially extend the kitchen, so installing only what was needed at the time would have created additional disruption and expense later.
The electrical system needed to be safe for immediate use while also providing flexibility for future improvements.
Planning the House Rewire
We initially provided a provisional quotation using the property’s floor plans. Once access was available, we carried out a detailed survey to confirm the final scope of work.
This allowed us to review:
- The condition of the existing wiring
- Socket and lighting positions
- The family’s current requirements
- Planned future renovations
- Kitchen appliance supplies
- Internet and data requirements
- Access beneath floors and within walls
This planning stage helped us create a clear programme of work and avoid unnecessary changes once the rewire had started.
The Electrical Work We Completed
As part of the full property rewire, we installed:
- New electrical wiring throughout the house
- Additional socket outlets in the main living areas and bedrooms
- New switches and lighting connections
- Illuminated bathroom mirrors
- Hardwired ethernet cabling to the attic rooms
- Dedicated circuits for the hob, oven and microwave
- Electrical supplies ready for future kitchen improvements
- Modern circuit protection and electrical certification
Where suitable, we tested and upgraded parts of the existing kitchen wiring rather than removing everything unnecessarily.
This helped reduce disruption while still ensuring the system was safe and properly prepared for the family’s future plans.

First Fix Electrical Work
The first-fix stage involved installing the new cabling before the walls and floors were finished.
Our electricians:
- Routed cables beneath floors and through walls
- Installed new wiring for sockets, lighting and appliances
- Prepared electrical back boxes and connection points
- Installed ethernet cabling for improved home connectivity
- Labelled and organised circuits ready for the next stage
Careful first-fix work is important because much of the wiring becomes concealed once plastering and decorating are completed.
Second Fix and Completion
Once the first-fix work and plastering were complete, we returned for the second-fix stage.
This included:
- Installing sockets and switches
- Connecting lighting points
- Fitting the illuminated mirrors
- Connecting the new circuits
- Testing the complete installation
- Completing the required electrical certification
- Reinstating flooring where necessary
- Cleaning the working areas before handover
Before the property was handed back, the installation was fully tested to confirm that it was safe and operating correctly.
The Finished Result
The full house rewire was completed on schedule, allowing the family to move into their Sheffield home with confidence.
The completed installation now provides:
- A safe and compliant electrical system
- More sockets for everyday family use
- Modern lighting and electrical controls
- Reliable ethernet connections in the attic rooms
- Dedicated kitchen appliance circuits
- Electrical capacity for future renovation work
- Greater peace of mind for the new homeowners
By planning ahead, we were able to create an electrical system that works for the family now while reducing the need for disruptive changes later.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a full house rewire take?
The timescale depends on the size of the property, its condition and the number of electrical points required. Larger properties, such as this six-bedroom home, require careful planning and may take longer than a standard house rewire.
Can a house rewire be completed before I move in?
Yes. Completing the work while the property is empty is often easier and can reduce disruption. We can work with your purchase, renovation or moving schedule wherever possible.
Does a full rewire include new sockets and switches?
Yes. A full rewire normally includes new wiring, sockets, switches, lighting circuits and an appropriate consumer unit. The exact specification is agreed during the survey.
Can you prepare wiring for future renovations?
Yes. We can install dedicated circuits and electrical supplies for planned kitchens, extensions, loft conversions, EV chargers, air conditioning and other future improvements.
Do you provide electrical certification?
Yes. Once the work has been completed and tested, the appropriate electrical certification is provided.
Do you carry out rewires outside S11?
Yes. Smart Electricians carry out house rewires throughout Sheffield and the surrounding areas of South Yorkshire.
