Does your Sheffield home need a rewire?

What is a house rewire?

A house rewire involves replacing old or unsuitable electrical wiring, sockets, switches, circuits and often the consumer unit. This may be needed if the existing installation is unsafe, outdated, damaged or no longer suitable for how your home is used today.

Rewiring your property helps give you peace of mind that your electrics are safe, modern and fit for everyday life. New circuits and a modern consumer unit can improve electrical safety, reduce the risk of fire hazards and help your home cope with today’s appliances, gadgets, lighting and heating controls.

A rewire can be full or partial. Some Sheffield properties need a complete electrical upgrade, while others only need certain areas updated, such as a kitchen, extension, loft conversion or renovated room. If your property is over 25 years old, you are planning building work, or your electrics have not been checked for many years, Smart Electricians can inspect your installation and talk you through the best options.

Improve electrical safety

Old or damaged wiring can increase the risk of faults, overheating and electrical hazards.

Make your home work better

A rewire gives you the chance to add more sockets, improve lighting and plan your electrics around modern living.

Prepare for future upgrades

Useful if you are renovating, adding an extension, upgrading your consumer unit or planning future electrical work.

Full House Rewire for a 6 -Bedroom Property in Ecclesall, Sheffield

We recently completed a full house rewire for a large 6-bedroom property in Sheffield’s S11 area. The homeowners were relocating to Sheffield and needed the electrical work completed before moving in with their growing family.

The project included new wiring throughout the property, additional socket outlets, illuminated mirrors and hardwired ethernet connections for the attic rooms. We also installed dedicated circuits for future kitchen appliances, helping prepare the property for planned renovation and extension work.

By carefully testing and upgrading suitable parts of the existing kitchen installation, we were able to minimise unnecessary disruption while still delivering a safe, compliant and future-ready electrical system.

When might you need a rewire?

Old or outdated wiring

If your wiring has not been updated for many years, it may no longer meet modern safety standards.

Frequent electrical issues

Tripping circuits, flickering lights, damaged sockets or burning smells should always be checked.

Renovation work

A rewire is often best carried out before plastering, decorating or fitting a new kitchen.

Not enough sockets

Older homes often do not have enough sockets for modern appliances, chargers and home working.

Sheffield House Rewire

Full and partial rewires

Not every property needs a full rewire. After checking your electrical system, we can advise whether a full rewire, partial rewire or smaller remedial work is the right option.

A full rewire is usually the best option for older properties where the existing wiring, circuits, sockets, switches and consumer unit are no longer suitable for modern use.

This gives you a safer, more reliable electrical system and also gives you the chance to plan the layout properly. That might mean adding more sockets, improving lighting, preparing for home working, upgrading kitchen electrics or making sure the property is ready for future electrical demands.

Not every property needs a full rewire. A partial rewire can be a good option when only certain areas of the home need upgrading, such as a kitchen, extension, loft conversion, garage or newly renovated room.

This is often useful during building work, as the electrics can be planned before plastering, decorating or new fittings are installed. It can also help bring specific areas of the property up to a safer and more practical standard.

If your EICR report highlights issues with the wiring, circuits, sockets or consumer unit, we can explain what the report means and what work is needed next.

Some faults may only need small remedial work, while others may point towards larger electrical upgrades. Smart Electricians can talk you through the findings clearly and provide a quote for the work required to make the installation safe and suitable.

FAQ

Got a question about house rewire?

Here are some of the things we’re most often asked by customers across South Yorkshire. If you’re still not sure about something, just give us a ring, we’re always happy to help.

Common signs include frequent tripping circuits, flickering lights, old fuse boxes, rubber or fabric wiring, or a property that hasn’t been rewired in over 25 years. If you’re unsure, a qualified Sheffield electrician can carry out an inspection and advise whether a full or partial rewire is needed.

Most electrical installations last around 25–30 years. If your property in Sheffield is older and hasn’t been updated, it may be time to consider a rewire to meet current safety standards.
The time depends on the size of the property. A typical 3-bed house rewire in Sheffield usually takes around 5 to 7 days, although this can vary depending on access, occupancy, and the amount of electrical points required.
Yes, but it can be disruptive as floors, walls and ceilings may need to be accessed. Many homeowners in Sheffield choose to carry out rewires during renovations or when the property is empty.
The cost depends on the size of the property, number of sockets, lighting points, and any additional features. A professional electrician will normally provide a survey and quotation to give you an accurate price.
A rewire involves removing old wiring, installing new cables, fitting a modern consumer unit, installing new sockets and switches, and testing the system. Once complete, you receive an Electrical Installation Certificate confirming the work meets UK regulations.
Yes. Most full rewires include installing a modern consumer unit with RCD protection to improve electrical safety and meet current regulations.
Some minor plastering or making good is usually required because electricians need to access walls to run cables and install back boxes.

If the existing wiring is old or overloaded, it’s often recommended to rewire before or during renovations. This allows you to add modern sockets, lighting and appliance circuits safely.

Yes. Electrical rewires must comply with Part P of the Building Regulations. Your electrician should provide certification and register the work with the local authority.

Landlords must ensure the electrical installation is safe and have an EICR every 5 years. If the report identifies unsafe wiring, a rewire may be required.

Modern homes typically require more sockets than older properties. During a rewire, electricians will usually recommend additional sockets in kitchens, living rooms and bedrooms to safely support modern appliances and devices.
